In 2005 Stockport County Supporters Trust completed their takeover of the club from previous owner Brian Kennedy (Cheshire Sports) after first registering their interest in March. The Hatters became the fourth club in the Football League to be taken over by a supporters trust following in the footsteps of Chesterfield, Brentford and Rushden & Diamonds. Although the supporters trust had taken over the club, they didn't gain control of the ground as Edgeley Park remained under the ownership of Kennedy and Cheshire Sport
